Roros, Trondelag County, Norway. Mountain village of Roros (650m altitude) is one of the oldest towns of wooden buildings in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Copper was discovered in 1644 and it then became one of the most important mining communities in Norway. Houses are dating back to the 1700’s and 1800’s. The church is also called the Bergstadens Ziir. Mining continued until 1977. In the area around Roros there were more than 40 copper mines and over 200 chrome mines and quarries in the area. Most productive mines are some 12km NE of Roros
